Gender equality

Gender equality is a fundamental value of the European Union, enshrined in its treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights (Article 23). It is also one of the strategic objectives of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 (Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls).

Nationally, the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) has produced a document titled "Guidelines for MIUR's positive actions on gender issues in universities and research", which contains a series of specific recommendations for universities.

In this perspective, universities, as educational and research institutions, are called upon to implement a range of actions and behaviors aimed at ensuring gender equality and promoting an inclusive culture that respects all forms of identity. An inclusive university is attentive to identity needs, values differences, and promotes individual, social, and organizational well-being. In an inclusive university, no individual (student, faculty, or staff member) should feel devalued, unsupported, or discriminated against due to their identity characteristics.

Gender equality is one of the strategic objectives of the Federico II University, which explicitly commits in its statute to "ensure gender equality and equal opportunities, strengthening the protection of workers and guaranteeing the absence of any form of psychological or moral violence, direct and indirect discrimination based on gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, disability, religion, and language."

In line with this commitment, Federico II University has established a section on its portal entirely dedicated to gender equality and equal opportunities in the university, structured into the following subsections:

  • Data: contains gender-disaggregated data, graphs, and tables related to gender indicators for students, faculty and researchers, technical-administrative staff, managerial staff, and governing bodies. The data is monitored and updated at least quarterly.
  • Documents: presents the main references to gender equality within the university's strategic and management documents.
  • Organizations: describes the network of bodies, structures, permanent services, and active entities within Federico II University for safeguarding gender equality and combating discrimination based on sexual and gender stigma.
  • Actions: describes the planned actions within the ongoing Gender Equality Plan, with the updated progress status at least quarterly.
