UniON: The National University Orchestra Is Born
Many talented musicians, various departments, one orchestra. Call for new applications
To combine university education, a passion for music, and social interaction through the creation of a national university orchestra. This is the goal of UniON – National University Orchestra, a project aimed at female and male university students and recent graduates from universities across Italy who play a musical instrument at a high level.
The initiative was launched with the aim of offering young musicians the opportunity to continue and develop their artistic pursuits even while pursuing their university studies, connecting them with other students from various Italian academic institutions and pairing them with high-profile professional musicians, tutors, teachers, and conductors.
After a period of training and preparation, the orchestra performs one or more concerts each year. Its debut took place in Pavia, at the Teatro Fraschini, on June 3,2026—the first event in a series designed to connect young musical talents with Italian universities.
UniON also stems from an awareness of the difficulties many young musicians face in continuing their training once they begin their university studies. Changes in city and residence, academic commitments, financial constraints, and difficulties in finding new training opportunities can, in fact, make it more challenging to maintain a consistent musical practice—even for those who have reached significant levels of proficiency.
The National University Orchestra aims to address these needs through a structured program that allows participants to maintain and develop their technical and artistic skills, continuing to pursue music alongside their university studies.
The educational aspect goes hand in hand with the artistic one. The project aims to identify talented young musicians and offer them the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, perform in an orchestral setting, and gain experience through concerts and public performances. This experience can contribute to the participants’ artistic growth and, for some of them, also represent an opportunity to explore new professional prospects.
Alongside music, UniON places a central emphasis on social interaction and relationship-building. The orchestra aims to become a meeting place for young people who are often far from their hometowns, united by a passion for music and a desire to share an artistic experience. Playing together thus also becomes a means of bringing people together, fostering collaboration, and promoting inclusion—capable of forging bonds that transcend geographical, social, and cultural differences.
Music thus takes on a role that goes beyond performance: it becomes an opportunity for exchange, personal growth, and participation in cultural life. With this in mind, the project also aims to engage younger audiences through initiatives such as open rehearsals and free concerts, helping to make musical culture more accessible.
UniON’s mission is therefore twofold: to support the educational, artistic, and socialdevelopment of young university musicians and, at the same time, to contribute to the dissemination of musical culture and the creation of a network among Italy’s various universities.
The initiative also aims to promote a positive and tangible portrayal of the younger generation, demonstrating how it is possible to combine academic study, training, and artistic passion. Through orchestral work and performances throughout Italy, UniON intends to highlight the talent present in Italian universities and emphasize the role of music as a significant component of education and student life.
The National University Orchestra thus presents itself as a project where artistic excellence, education, and social engagement converge. It is a national network built around music and people, with the goal of offering young musicians new tools to continue growing while, at the same time, contributing to a richer and more inclusive cultural landscape.
