QS World University Rankings by Subject: the Federico II among the best in the world
TheUniversity of Naples Federico II ranks among the best universities in the world and first among Southern Italian universities in the 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject report. This year's ranking is the largest ever and analyzes 1,700 universities in 100 countries around the world.
There arefive macro areas that the ranking takes into consideration, and in all of them the Federico II improves its ranking: Engineering and Technology where it ranks 173rd and was 191st in 2024; Medicine and Life Sciences where it moves up to position 193 from 226; Natural Sciences ranks 209 from 224 last year; Humanities and the Arts where it occupies position 216 from 261st in the previous edition; and Social Sciences and Management where it climbs five positions from 331 to 326.
The ranking focuses its analysis on 55 disciplines. The Federico II is present in 32 teachings and, compared to the previous edition, 4 go up, 7 go down, 19 maintain their position, and 2 enter the ranking for the first time. National supremacy in Dentistry, where the Federico II precedes all other Italian universities, placing in a range between 51st and 120th in the world.
Departments advancing in the 15th edition ranking include Agraria, which ranks 71st, climbing 11 positions, and Pharmacy, which ranks 80th, recovering 5 positions. New entries are Political Science and Veterinary Science, which also ranks in the top 100 along with Civil and Construction Engineering.
QS uses five key parameters to rank the subjects. Reputation indicators are based on responses from more than 240 thousand employers and academics to QS surveys, while citations per article and the H-index measure research impact and productivity. The International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.
