ARWU Shanghai ranking: the Federico II is confirmed in the range of the third Italian in the world

Federico II University is always among the best universities in the world according to the Shanghai ARWU - Academic Ranking of World Universities, published as usual on August 15.

The international ranking carried out by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy 2025, made on the basis of a transparent methodology and objective data provided by third parties. reports the best 1,000 universities in the world out of the 2,500 or so it surveyed this year. This year's ranking includes 41 Italian universities.

Federico II University is confirmed again this year in the third range of Italian universities.

In the world rankings, in the 201- 300 range were, in order, the University of Bologna, the University Federico II, the University of Pisa and the University of Turin.

In the range 101 - 150 isSapienza University, first among Italians, and in the positions between 151 - 200 are theUniversity of Milan and theUniversity of Padua.

At the global level, Pharmacy confirms its third position in the ranking of the best subjects. The only Italian among the world's top 10 to have a podium position in the world.

Alsoranking within the top 50, greatly improving their positions from last year's ARWUassessment, are Aerospace Engineering, in 26th place (35th last year) and Agricultural Sciences, in 36th place (40th in 2024). Physics climbs positions as well, which is in the 51-75 range and was in the 76 - 100 last year. It maintains position 51 - 75 Civil Engineering, a segment in which Veterinary Sciences is also located.

In the 76-100 range are Food Science & Technology and Mining & Mineral Engineering. In the 101-150 range are Mechanical Engineering, Instruments Science & Technology, Energy Science & Engineering, Water Resources and Dentistry & Oral Sciences. Numerous subjects ranked in the 151-200 range include Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Biotechnology, Transportation Science & Technology, Biological Sciences and Medical Technology.

There are six ARWU evaluation indicators: the Nobel Prizes and Fields medals of former students (10 percent) or researchers at the individual university (20 percent), the number of most-cited researchers according to Clarivate Analytics (20 percent), publications in "Nature & Science" (20 percent), and citations of technological-social publications (20 percent). These parameters are then correlated with the performance of academics, giving an additional parameter of productivity per capita (10%).

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy is among the most accredited international rating agencies for evaluating universities and research institutions.
