"Presidential Award" to hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery at AOU Federico II
Hepato-bilio-pancreatic surgery at the Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Federico II in Naples, directed by Professor Roberto Troisi, won, thanks to the study led by Professor Roberto Montalti, the most coveted award of the 60th Congress of the Korean Society of Hepato-bilio-pancreatic Surgery (Surgical Week 2024): the "Presidential Award."
Held in Seoul, the Congress involved more than 2,000 surgeons from 35 countries; about 800 presentations covered new surgical technologies, especially in laparoscopic surgery, and the functionality of new robots.
The study presented by the Federican group began in 2020, thanks to the collaboration with Professor Giancarlo Troncone, Director of the Company's Cytopathology and Predictive Molecular Pathology Program, and concerns the utility of liquid biopsy in the surgery of colo-rectal liver metastases. Liquid biopsy is an innovative molecular pathology technique that allows detection of parts of tumor DNA in the blood, even before it can be detected by usual radiological examinations.
Among the 8 presentations by the team from the UOC of Hepato-biliary-pancreatic Surgery, a second award (Best Oral Presentation) was given to Marco Maione, a physician-in-training, for a comparative study between liver resection techniques using a laparoscopic or robotic approach.
"We are proud of these awards," stresses Professor Troisi, "which show that Italian surgery is among the most advanced in the world and confirm at the international level the progressive growth of the Federiciana hepato-bilio-pancreatic surgery, born four years ago.
