'Luck. Governing Uncertainty'
'Luck. Governing Uncertainty'
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Palazzo Ricca (Via dei Tribunali, 213), opens the exhibition Fortuna. Governing Uncertainty, promoted by the Department of Economic and Statistical Sciences of the Federico II University of Naples (organizational contact person Maria Carmela Schisani), with the Institute of Mediterranean European History of the CNR and the Fondazione Banco Napoli, and under the patronage of the City of Naples and the City of Procida.
An exhibition that invites the public to reflect on how man, from the past to the present, has tried to deal with what he cannot control. Along the exhibition route, a narrative unfolds through the different ways in which societies have attempted to govern uncertainty: from divinatory and religious practices to the strategies of navigators, to the emergence of statistical probability and the calculations of insurers. Visitors will find themselves immersed in the experience of a sea storm through the sound installation by artist and composer Roberto Pugliese and projections by Lukas Sander. Archival documents, material evidence and contemporary reflections intertwine to show how "luck," yesterday as today, remains a living force that conditions individual and collective choices. A journey between historical memory and current events, to understand how, despite centuries of scientific progress, man is once again faced with an uncertainty that eludes mathematical models.
The project is curated by Simona Morini (IUAV, Venice), the works in the exhibition are by Jacques Perconte, Roberto Pugliese, Francesco Santosuosso, installation by Lukas Sander and Klaus Mussen. Contemporary paintings by: Isabella Ducrot; Ilaria Di Fiore; Claudio Grenzi; Nicola Liberatore; Marco Zezza. Scientific Committee: Giovanni Ceccarelli (University of Milan), Maria Carmela Schisani (University of Naples Federico II), Andrea Addobbati (University of Pisa), Paola Avallone (ISEM CNR), Luisa Piccinno (University of Genoa), Gea Palumbo and Raffaella Salvemini (ISEM, CNR).
The exhibition is carried out as part of the PRIN PNRR 2022 WWS (Winds, Waves and Storms) (PI Maria Carmela Schisani, Dises, Unina) (CUP E53D2302015001); PRIN 2022 Under Uncertainty (PI Giovanni Ceccarelli, Unimi) (CUP D53D230006) projects.
