Pediatrics, Clinical Genetics and Pediatric Surgery
The area carries out integrated research focused on acute and chronic pediatric diseases with a bench to bedside approach aiming to identify new and more effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. A major emphasis is dedicated to the development of gene therapy or corrective replacement therapy, enzymatic therapy for lysosomal diseases, therapies with immunomodulatory and biological drugs and dietotherapies for genetic, metabolic, gastroenterological and immunological diseases. A relevant role has the study of intracellular trafficking, new immune defects, congenital malformations, pathophysiology of the very low birth weight newborn, pre- and perinatal infections, AIDS and the identification of genetic and epigenetic biomarkers for neuropsichiatric, immune-allergic and gastroenterological diseases. The medical genetics studies genomics and post-genomics aiming the identification of the risk profile for genetic diseases and the molecular basis of chronic inflammatory diseases and malformations. The pediatric surgery activities are more focused on new minimally invasive techniques for the correction of congenital malformations and tissue engineering and bio-materials for the reconstruction of organs and tissues.
