The "15-Minute Neighborhood" project kicks off: new transportation links for schools in the eastern part of Naples

Starting Monday, September 1, Naples has a new public transportation system serving the eastern part of the city. The main new feature is a circular route connecting Barra, Ponticelli, and San Giovanni with the area’s high schools, designed to make the commute to school easier for hundreds of students.

The project, called “15-Minute Neighborhood, ” is the result of a joint effortby the Vivoanapoli Aps association, the SUM (Smart and Sustainable Mobility) team at Federico II University, and the Amicar-Gesco consortium, with the participation of Municipality 6 and the seven high schools in the area.

The initiative is based on a survey conducted among students, which revealed a chronic lack of public transportation in the neighborhood and made it possible to precisely identify actual mobility needs.
The figures, analyzed by the Department of Engineering at Federico II, speak for themselves: half of the students (50%) commute to school by private vehicle, while only 4.6% use public transportation. This means that, all too often, students choose a school based on how easy it is to get there, rather than on what they want to study.

The result of this initiative—which originated “from the grassroots” but is based on concrete data and supported by the City and the ANM—is the reorganization of several bus routes to improve connections in the eastern part of the city. The goal is clear: to allow students to choose a high school based on their interests and abilities, without logistics becoming an obstacle.
