The church of Sant'Antoniello in Port'Alba, Bellini Square, reopens. Having completed restoration work by the Frederick II will be inaugurated on Tuesday, July 15.
The ceremony, which will be held in the sacred building at 5:30 p.m., will be introduced by institutional greetings from Matteo Lorito, chancellor of the University of Naples Federico II, and Gaetano Manfredi, mayor of the city of Naples. This will be followed by speeches by Barbara Balbi, of the Sopraintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the City of Naples, and Valentina Russo, director of the School of Specialization in Architectural and Landscape Heritage in Naples.
The Church of Sant'Antoniello is part of the Monumental Complex of Sant'Antoniello a Port'Alba, located in Piazza Bellini in the historic center of Naples.
The Franciscan monastery of St. Anthony of Padua, also known as Sant'Antoniello a Port'Alba was founded in 1550 and maintained its original function until 1819.
It had various vicissitudes until 1980 then, as a result of earthquake damage and the absence of restoration work, in 1987 the building passed to the City of Naples, which granted it on free loan for use to the Federico II , which took charge of the restoration of the complex and allocated it as the headquarters of the Humanities Area Research Library - BRAU.
The 'restoration of the church, a building dating back to 1578, is part of the policies of recovery and enhancement of the historical and artistic heritage of the University of Frederick II.
The church was closed to the public in 2010 due to problems with the sealing of the dome stuccoes.
The restoration work, directed by Federico II staff, began in November 2023 and allowed the consolidation and preservation of the structure and decorations of the church, while ensuring greater stability and durability of constituent materials.During the work in the church, new lighting and a sound system were also installed.
