“Guido Dorso” Award

The “Guido Dorso” awards, sponsored by the association of the same name chaired by Nicola Squitieri, will be presented on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Senate of the Republic, in the Zuccari Hall of Palazzo Giustiniani . The initiative—sponsored by the Senate of the Republic, the National Research Council, and the University of Naples Federico II —has, since 1970, simultaneously recognized young scholars from Southern Italy and prominent figures from the institutional, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres who“have contributed through their work to supporting the needs for development andthe ‘ ’ progress of the South.” This year’s recipients across the various categories of the 47th edition are: Salvatore Luongo, Commander General of the Carabinieri (institutions); Roberto Andò, filmmaker and writer (culture); Danilo Ercolini, Director of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Naples Federico II (academia); Daniele Archibugi, professor of environmental economics and sustainable development at Mercatorum University (research); Filippo Liverini, president of Mangimi Liverini S.p.A. – Telese Terme (private enterprise); Fr. Eraldo Cacchione, S .J. —Rector of Santa Maria d’ , della Speranza in Scampia , Naples (third sector); Chiara Mulè for her doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Sannio titled“Advanced Photonics-Based Theranostic Platforms for Locoregional Approaches to Cancer” (ordinary section); Claudio Tesauro, president of Save the Children Italy (international section); Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), President Mariangela Zappia; Cotec Foundation for Technological Innovation, President Fabiola Gianotti ( Mediterranean section).

The commemorative plaque from President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, intended for an institution working on behalf of Southern Italy, was awarded this year to the Fondazione Ente Ville Vesuviane, chaired by Gennaro Miranda. The selection committee is composed as follows: Luigi Sbarra, Undersecretary to the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for policies for Southern Italy; Orazio Abbamonte, President of the Banco di Napoli Foundation; Andrea Lenzi, President of the National Research Council; Andrea Mazzucchi, rector of the University of Naples Federico II; Filippo Patroni Griffi, president of the scientific committee of the Dorso Association; Nicola Squitieri, president of the Dorso Association; and commission secretary Francesco Saverio Coppola, secretary general of the Dorso Association.

The roll of honor for the “Guido Dorso” award includes some of the most influential figures from the worlds of government, research, economics, and culture: from Giovanni Leone to Giorgio Napolitano; from Renato Dulbecco to Franco Modigliani; from Antonio Marzano to Pietro Grasso; from Pasquale Saraceno to Francesco Paolo Casavola; from Antonio D’Amato to Dominick Salvatore; from Francesco Rosi to Riccardo Muti. The Dorso Award consists of an artistic bronze sculpture created exclusively by the sculptor Giuseppe Pirozzi.
