Prague awards honorary degree to professor Alessandro Piccolo
He will fly to Prague to receive the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa Alessandro Piccolo, professor of Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Federico II University.
On Monday, May 18, the professor will receive the important recognition bestowed on him by the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague and communicated to him, a month earlier on an official basis, by the rector of the important Czech university.
The recognition comes as a seal of pioneering researchactivity in the field of the chemistry and dynamics of natural environmental organic matter or humus, a field of study in which the professor has been moving for 30 years.
His research on humic substances has shown how this material consists of small molecules linked by weak bonds. They are not, that is, large, high-molecular-weight polymers, as previously believed.
Discoveries that open new possibilities for understanding the mechanisms of stabilization of organic carbon in the environment but not only. In fact, his studies also play an important role in the development of technologies for fixing organic carbon in soils, thus reducing the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.
On staff at the Frederick II since '93, the professor has collaborated since 1990 in the activities of the Department of Soil Science of the then Agriculture University of Prague. (A. Migliaccio)
