Maria Bakunin Medal to Catia Bastioli

The first edition of the Maria Bakunin Medal, organized by the Italian Chemical Society, will be held on Oct. 24, 2025 at 3 p.m. in theAula Magna Storica of the University of Federico II, Corso Umberto I, 40.

The medal will be presented to Catia Bastioli, chemist, president and CEO of Novamont, internationally recognized for her pioneering efforts in the industrial development of innovative and sustainable materials.

A day of celebration of chemistry, but also of women's scientific excellence, which, pioneer Maria Bakunin, as early as 1895 , demonstrated through her academic and research activities, has no gender.

After greetings from Matteo Lorito, Rector of the University of Naples Federico II, the proceedings will be opened by Gianluca Farinola, President of the Italian Chemical Society and Angela Agostiano, President of the European Chemical Society.

Following this, Professor Rosa Lanzetta of the University Federico II will speak about the figure of Maria Bakunin, between history and myth of a "first woman" of Italian chemistry.

The ceremony will get into full swing with the presentation of the Maria Bakunin Medal to the winner, accompanied by the reading of the motivation and laudation by Professor Gianluca Farinola.

At 4 p.m. the Lectio magistralis by Dr. Catia Bastioli.

The day will conclude with a talk by Professor Giorgia Oliviero of the University of Naples Federico II.
