Matteo Lorito, a current member of the ANVUR Executive Board: a farewell to the University

With his appointment to the ANVUR Governing Council, Matteo Lorito concludes his tenure as rector of the University of Naples Federico II. The appointment, made official with the signing of the ministerial decree following approval by the Council of Ministers and the relevant parliamentary committees, marks the rector’s transition to the primary body responsible for evaluating Italian universities and research institutions.

For Lorito, this marks the beginning of a new institutional role after six years at the helm of Federico II University. His appointment to ANVUR is seen as recognition of the role he has assumed at the national level, thanks in part to his work in research, projects funded by the PNRR, and policies for the development of the university system.

At Federico II, his successor for the 2026–2032 term has already been elected: it will be Andrea Mazzucchi, full professor of Italian Literary Philology and director of the Department of Humanities. Until he takes office, Professor Angela Zampella—full professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Pharmacy and former vice rector of the university—will serve as acting rector.

This brings to a close a six-year term. During Lorito’s tenure, the university strengthened its international presence, celebrated the 800th anniversary of its founding, consolidated relationships with businesses and institutions, and secured significant funding for research and innovation. With her appointment to ANVUR, Lorito will now help shape evaluation policies for the entire Italian university system, while Federico II University prepares to embark on a new phase under the leadership of the newly elected rector.
