Luigi Barrea wins SIE 40 award
Frederick is the winner of the SIE 40 Prize, announced by the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE) and intended for the best Italian Researcher in Endocrinology under the age of 40, the most important Italian award for young researchers in the endocrinological and metabolic field.
Luigi Barrea, Nutrition ScienceSpecialist at the Obesity Center of Excellence accredited by the SIO - Italian Society for Obesity - and EASO - European Association for the Study of Obesity - at the II Policlinico di Napoli Federico II, UOC of Endocrinology directed by Annamaria Colao, Professional Consultant at the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery of the University of Naples Federico II and Associate Professor in Applied Dietetic Sciences and Techniques (Sector MED/49 SSD 06/D2 - Endocrinology, Nephrology and Food Science) at Pegaso University.
The award ceremony took place during the 41st National Congress of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE), at which Luigi Barrea gave a Lectio Magistralis on his academic and scientific career in July.
"It is a great honor for me to receive this prestigious award," he said, "It is an important recognition for all young researchers who dedicate themselves, with self-sacrifice, to scientific research often sacrificing even their private lives.
Then the special dedication: "The deepest thanks go to my parents to whom I dedicate this Prize: To my mother, without her teachings and love I would surely not be the person I am today; To my father who taught me the sense of sacrifice and to never lose simplicity and humility. Special thanks also go to my brother, Elio and my sister, Feliciana for supporting me at all times and for always being present in my life. Torremaggiore represents for me the place of my happy and carefree childhood, and it is an honor for me to put my knowledge at the disposal of the people of this country. This award represents an important additional stimulus to occupy myself even more with dedication to the Italian Society of Endocrinology and to national and international scientific medical research. The credit for this achievement also goes to my team, especially Silvia Savastano, Giovanna Muscogiuri and Annamaria Colao , who on the same occasion was elected President of the Italian Society of Endocrinology."
Luigi Barrea has a scientific research activity characterized by the publication of more than 120 original articles in international journals (with a Hirsch index of 28). His research ranges from obesity to endocrine dysfunctions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, hypovitaminosis D, thyroid tumors and neuroendocrine tumors to dermatological disorders such as acne, psoriasis and hydrosadenitis suppurativa. Recently, he has been actively working on ketogenic diet in patients with obesity in different clinical settings. He has received numerous Italian and international awards such as the Nutrients 2020 Young Investigator Award , a worldwide young investigator award in the field of clinical nutrition reserved for two researchers worldwide(https://www.mdpi.com/journal/nutrients/awards). In addition, he is on the scientific board of several international scientific journals, is on the teaching committee of the Italian Society of Endocrinology, was recently elected to the scientific committee of the Italian Society of Obesity (SIO), and serves as Treasurer of the Italian Society of Obesity (SIO), Campania section.
