Professor Malapelle at the World Conference on Lung Cancer 2025

Professor Umberto Malapelle, of the Department of Public Health at Federico II University, headed by Professor Giancarlo Troncone, has been appointed by the International Association of the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) as co-chair of the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC), the world's largest meeting dedicated to lung cancer. More than 7,000 delegates come from more than 100 countries to discuss the latest developments on research in thoracic neoplasms.

The event will be held in Barcelona in 2025. Joining Professor Malapelle will be Jarushka Naidoo, from Beaumont Hospital in Dublin; Isabelle Opitz, from University Hospital Zurich; and Noemi Reguart, Hospital Clinic in Barcelona.

Currently, Professor Malapelle is chairman of the Laboratory of Predictive Molecular Pathology, Department of Public Health, University Federico II. He holds the position of scientific secretary of the International Society of Liquid Biopsy and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Liquid Biopsy. His main research interest is in the field of validation and testing of genomic biomarkers for predictive information in solid tumors, with a focus on lung cancer. In addition, he has developed expertise in tailoring next-generation assays for various applications for simultaneous detection of clinically relevant alterations (e.g., EGFR mutations, ALK translocation, PD-L1 expression) in the routine setting, including the handling of different types of samples, such as tissue and/or liquid biopsy specimens.
