'Photojournalism Toward a Global Visual Culture (1969 - 1997)' is the theme of a conference to be held in Naples, at theUniversity of Naples Federico II, on November 3 and 4, 2025. Edited by scholars Massimiliano Gaudiosi and Anna Masecchia, under the patronage of the University Cinema Council, the Department of Humanistic Studies, the University Federico II and the University of Florence, the proceedings will be held between the DSU building in Via Porta di Massa and the headquarters of BRAU, Humanistic Area Research Library, in Piazza Bellini.

The proceedings will open on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at 3 p.m. in the former Wooden Catalogs Room of the DSU, with institutional greetings by Andrea Mazzucchi, Director of the Department of Humanities, and an introduction by Massimiliano Gaudiosi, of the Federico II, and Anna Masecchia, of the University of Florence.

OnTuesday, Nov. 4 in the Brau Conference Hall, at 9:30 a.m., institutional greetings by Nicola Madonna, Director of the Humanities Area Research Library, will be followed by a meeting with photojournalist Gianni Fiorito on the theme 'From Photojournalism to Stage Photography and Back.

Photojournalism Towards a Global Visual Culture (1969-1997) aims to return to the themes addressed in 2024 with the conference Photojournalism in the Media System (1936-1972), to focus on a research territory connoted by growing globalization as well as a gradual and unstoppable media convergence: phenomena that in Italy (as in the rest of the world) have also invested the sphere of news, distorting the modalities of their restitution in the form of storytelling through the photographic lens. If already in the golden age of the magazines the sequential narrative of photo-essays dialogued in power with the languages of advertising, fashion, comics, cinema and television, the time span from 1969 to 1997 shows how Italian photojournalistic practice has measured itself against an even more articulated, complex and transnational media system, demonstrating a force of penetration outside the illustrated magazine market.
