"The End of Life Today. Issues and Perspectives."
"The End of Life Today. Issues and Perspectives" is the seminar scheduled for Friday, Nov. 28, 2025, starting at 9:30 a.m., which will be held in thePessina Lecture Hall of the Department of Law in Corso Umberto I No. 40.
The proceedings, opened by greetings from Carla Masi, Director of the Department of Law, will take place under the coordination of Bruno De Maria (Federico II) and will feature papers by Fulvia Abbondante (Federico II), Corrado Caruso (University of Bologna), Andrea Pugiotto (University of Ferrara) and Chiara Tripodina (University of Eastern Piedmont). A debate will follow, with scheduled talks by Giulia Beguinot, Andrea Chiappetta, Virgilia Fogliame and Ilaria Piccolo.
Conclusions by Andrea Patroni Griffi (Federico II) will close the meeting.
The seminar will focus on the broad spectrum of legal and ethical-political profiles related to the regulation of the end-of-life, in light of the famous ruling No. 242/2019 of the Constitutional Court and the subsequent jurisprudential developments, in the persistent omission by the state legislature of an exhaustive regulation of the matter. The topic, of stringent topicality in both political debate and academic reflection, will be investigated with respect to the multiple questions it raises: the characters (and limits) of the peculiar decisional techniques employed by the Court; the necessary balance between the protection of fundamental rights and the safeguarding of legislative discretion; and the possibility for the regions to regulate the profiles lacking regulation by the state legislature.
The meeting is part of the series of seminars organized by a group of constitutional law professors from the Friderian Department of Law (Fulvia Abbondante, Bruno De Maria, Gennaro Ferraiuolo, Sara Lieto, Stefania Parisi, Fulvio Pastore, Michela Troisi, Alfonso Vuolo); it is organized in collaboration with the PhDs in "Economic Law" and "Human Rights. Theory, History, Practice" and counts on the sponsorship of the "Interuniversity Center for Research and Bioethics." The video recording of the proceedings will be available on Radical Radio.
