The "Capo d'Orlando" International Science Prize, organized by the Museo Mineralogico Campano Fondazione Discepolo, has reached its 25th edition. On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 6 p.m., the Giusso Castle in Vico Equense will welcome the parterre of awardees, composed, as always, of prominent personalities from the world of science, culture, popularization and business. There will also be a Nobel Prize winner, the 19th in the history of the event: he is Svante Pääbo, Nobel Prize in Medicine 2022, Director of the Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig. The Swedish scientist discovered the genome of Neanderthal Man, highlighting its close link to our DNA, a fundamental relationship in medical research applied to countering and treating so many current diseases.
For the "Disclosure" section, the silver plaque will be awarded to Professor Giuseppe Remuzzi, among the most well-known and authoritative Italian scientists, Director of the "Mario Negri" Pharmacological Research Institute in Milan. For the "Science and Food" category, the award will be presented to Professor Maurizio Bifulco of the University of Naples Federico II, for his academic research activity on the Mediterranean diet, its applications in the medical field and the promotion of its healthy principles in the mass media. For the "Multimedia Communication" section, Professor Giorgio Manzi of Rome's "Sapienza" University and Academician of the Lincei, one of Italy's leading experts on human evolution, will be honored. For the "Cultural Management" section, Professor Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, will receive the award. For the "Science and Industry" section, on the other hand, Dr. Carlo Pontecorvo, president of Ferrarelle SpA, will be honored.
The event will be moderated by Dr. Luigi Vicinanza, journalist and president of the Cives Foundation, and chaired by Professor Matteo Lorito, Rector of the Federico II University of Naples, a university that sponsors the event with CNR, UGIS, Campania Region and the City of Vico Equense.
The"Capo d'Orlando" International Prize , conceived in 1999 by Umberto Celentano, director of the Museo Mineralogico Campano, boasts scientists such as mathematician John F. Nash, whose story inspired the film "A Beautiful Mind," biologist James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, and Andre Geim, creator of the discovery of graphene, a material present in the Museum of Vico Equense thanks to a donation from the famous Nobel laureate. Since 2020, the Prize has Sir Paul Nurse, Nobel Laureate and Director of the Francis Crick Institute in London, as its Honorary Chairman.
