Professor Giovanni Esposito has been elected Director of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) at the University of Naples Federico II for the three-year term from November 2026 to November 2029. He will succeed Professor Francesco Pirozzi, who has led the DICEA for the past six years, beginning in November 2020. Born in 1973, Giovanni Esposito, a full professor of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, was elected in the first round of voting.

Professor Esposito has conducted his research at laboratories both in Italy and abroad, drawing on an international research network he began building during his doctoral studies—which he completed over the course of a year at Wageningen University in the Netherlands—and has further strengthened through his coordination of numerous European research projects. As part of these projects, he has been coordinating a dynamic group of researchers active in the field of environmental technologies for 20 years, focusing primarily on the development, modeling, and engineering of innovative biotechnologies for the recovery of energy and resources from waste and wastewater. He is the co-author of over 300 publications in leading international environmental engineering journals and serves on the editorial boards of four international journals; he is also Editor-in-Chief of the “Hydrogen Energy” section of the journal *Energies*.
