At Frederick II, the prestigious Kenneth Warren Fellowship.
The prestigious Kenneth Warren Fellowship of the IHPBA - International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, for the year 2021/2022 has been awarded to PhD student Gianluca Cassese with an innovative study project conducted with Professor Roberto I. Troisi, Full Professor of General Surgery of the Federico II University afferent to the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Director of the U.O.C. of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery and Acting Director of the U.O.C. of General Surgery and Kidney Transplantation of the AOU Federico II.
Professor Troisi and Dr. Cassese's research project focuses on innovative surgical therapies of primary hepatocellular carcinoma, a very frequent pathology in Campania and throughout southern Italy, strongly related to viral infections (hepatitis B and C, even after viral eradication), now, however, observed more and more frequently in steato-inflammatory liver disease.
In particular, the study aims to improve operative risk stratification and to evaluate the association of new criteria such as functional reserve with indocyanine green and various degrees of portal hypertension to propose precision surgery that can improve short- and medium-term outcomes.
The research project will be conducted at Frederick II and Bundang University in Seoul under the supervision of Professor Ho-Seong HAN, a world expert in minimally invasive treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
The IHPBA Kenneth Warren Foundation, made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Kenneth W. Warren (a pioneer in portal hypertension liver surgery) was established in July 2006. After reviewing the first five years of the Warren Fellowship, Tom and George Warren, Ken's sons, decided to continue supporting the Fellowship with the goal of creating a corpus in the foundation that would produce sufficient funds to support the salary of two Warren Fellows each year.
