Federico II to host international conference 'REVELATIONS'
Federico II to host international conference 'REVELATIONS'
What are the places excluded, marginalized, removed from representation, and how can they be re-read, made visible, transformed? These questions are answered by REVELATIONS, the International Conference curated by Professors Marella Santangelo and Paola Scala, promoted as part of the RiSP - Right to Space, Space of Rights research of which Professor Santangelo is Scientific Responsible, to be held on October 9 and 10, 2025 at the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II.
The conference comes as part of the FRA 2022 research funded by the University Federico II, which explores the relationship between space and rights in places of deprivation of personal freedom, where the spatial configuration profoundly affects the exercise of fundamental rights such as identity, affectivity, health, education and work.
REVELATIONS is aimed at scholars, designers, artists, activists and doctoral students, proposing itself as a space for critical and transdisciplinary confrontation on the material and symbolic devices that produce confinement, invisibility and exclusion. The goal is twofold: not only to reveal the denied places of contemporaneity, but to activate new forms of understanding and transformation, capable of generating spatial justice and new imaginaries.
The call for papers is open until July 13, 2025, and invites contributions that hinge on one of three thematic axes:
-Visions // Perspectives - Research capable of resignifying excluded places through theoretical, political, pedagogical tools;
-Tools // Methods - Design, performative, cartographic and visual approaches that make negated realities visible;
-Experiences // Narratives - Situated studies of confinement camps, militarized territories, post-industrial spaces or removed infrastructure, to construct a counter-geography of marginalized places.
The selected proposals will flow into two modes of participation: the thematic sessions of the conference and the exhibition section "Research Postcards," an experimental exhibition that will welcome visual and performative fragments of research.
All selected contributions will be published in the open access proceedings of the conference, within the Confinamenti series of the Cratera publishing house. We look forward to seeing you in Naples for a lively and radical confrontation on the invisible places of the present.
