Two valuable collections recently received as gifts are on display at DIETI
There are two collections donated to DIETI, Frederick's Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and exhibited at the Library in the presence of Rector Matteo Lorito and Pro-Chancellor Angela Zampella.
The first collection consists of several hundred books that cover ethical, philosophical and social issues in the particular context of human-computer interaction (e.g. artificial intelligence, robotics); it was donated by Professor Guglielmo Tamburrini, who recently retired but continues to collaborate scientifically with many DIETI afferents.
The second collection, donated by Professor Luciano Ruocco, consists of about one hundred magazine issues, of a popular and technical nature, which testify to the birth and early development in Italy of radiotelegraphy, radiophony, television, electrical engineering and electronics. They were published in the period from the late 1800s to 1950; from reading them, one can reconstruct not only the history of the technical disciplines covered today in DIETI, but also a snapshot of the cultural, social and political life of the time. For many of these magazines, famous painters and illustrators of the time were also called upon to elaborate the illustrations.
These collections, accessible to the entire community of Frederick faculty and students, offer a valuable opportunity to reflect on the one hand on the origins of what DIETI deals with today from a scientific and educational point of view and on the in some ways extraordinary rapidity of the evolution of knowledge in this field, and on the other hand on the implications of research activities on society, sometimes even beyond the intentions or expectations of the scientists who carry them out.
