To Ilan Chet, the father of the 'green revolution,' honorary degree from the Frederick II
He is considered the father of the so-called 'green revolution' Professor Ilan Chet, president of theWeizmann Institute, to whom the Athenaeum will confer an honorary degree on Friday, January 18.
"Father of the green revolution in agriculture, he is unanimously considered the driving force behind a true global movement aimed at improving the quality of food," explains Professor Matteo Lorito of the Department of Arboriculture, Botany and Plant Pathology at the University's Faculty of Agriculture, who will read the laudatio academica-that is, that movement aimed at improving agricultural practices according to the principles of sustainability and low environmental impact and tending to the reduction of toxins and contamination."
An Israeli, Ilan Chet, who has more than four hundred publications and about thirty patents to his credit, has seen during his long career as a scientist been awarded numerous prizes by the world's leading organizations. One among them, the Wolf Prize for Agriculture, awarded to him in 1998 and considered the Nobel Prize for agricultural subjects.
"Conceptually and scientifically, Professor Chet can therefore be considered the true founding father of a new way of thinking," adds Professor Lorito, "and during his lecture he will address the issue of theimpact of biotechnology on agricultural production and food quality.
The ceremony to confer the Honorary Degree in Agricultural Sciences will begin at 11 a.m. in the Chinese Hall of the Faculty of Agriculture, 100 University Street in Portici. It will be introduced by Rector Guido Trombetti and Faculty Dean Paolo Masi. This will be followed by the academic laudatio to motivate the choice of conferment and, at 11:30 a.m., the lectio magistralis by Professor Chet. After the reading of the testationes of Professors Maurizio Iaccarino and Giovanni Martelli, the ceremony will conclude at 12:30 p.m. with the conferral of the most important academic award. (a.m.)
