The first edition of the review "Rivoluzioni Geniali - from the Spanish Viceroyalty to the Revolution of 1799," organized by the Fondazione Il Canto di Virgilio under the artistic direction of Carlo Faiello , who is also the protagonist with a unique show, is kicking off.
The initiative, carried out as part of the Affabulazione 2025 project, promoted and supported by the City of Naples, takes place in Municipality 4 (Poggioreale district and Industrial Zone) and aims to explore, through a multidisciplinary program of performances, meetings and workshops, one of the most tumultuous and creative periods of Neapolitan history.
The festival is divided into two intense weekends: the first on September 12, 13 and 14, the next on September 19 and 2025. Theaters, churches and unexpected places will become stages to relive the events and characters that forged Naples' revolutionary identity.
A distinctive element of the festival is the "I Rebel, Therefore We Are" workshop, which precedes each performance at 5:30 p.m. Five meetings open to all, dedicated to music, literature, creative writing, elevation of the soul and expression of the spirit, to embark on a path of small personal revolution.
It starts Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. with 'Cortelazzara,' From the "Relation de Naples" of Joseph II of Habsburg to Maria Theresa of Austria. Text by Enzo Salomone. The show, a fine interweaving of history, politics and music, comes to life from the precious pamphlet written by Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg following his visit to his sister Maria Carolina in Naples in 1769. A text of historical interest that combines the ironic tone of "gossip d'antan" with acute political-diplomatic reflections, revealing unpublished backgrounds of the Bourbon court. The staging, conceived as an ironic and incisive fresco, takes the form of a musical theater where the text, edited and performed by Enzo Salomone, dialogues with two antithetical sound worlds: the cultured music of the court and the popular and veracious sonority of Neapolitan alleys. Embodying this dichotomy are the ductile and intense voice of contralto Daniela Del Monaco and the multifaceted guitar of Antonio Grande, in a performance that restores all the vitality and contradictions of 18th-century Naples.
It continues on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. with Masaniello for the dramaturgy and direction of Annamaria Russo. The play tells the story of Tommaso Anello d'Amalfi, the fisherman who in July 1647 gave the Neapolitans a dream of redemption that lasted only 10 days before being betrayed and destroyed by the very city that had acclaimed him. The Teatro Il Pozzo e il Pendolo company brings to life a striking performance, suspended between stage word, music and dance. It is not only the story of a man, but the archetype of a historical condition that repeats itself: Naples as a place of unresolved contradictions, capable of raising and then devouring one's dreams. On stage: Alessio Sica, Marianita Carfora, Alfredo Mundo, Gennaro Monti, Michele Costantino, Viviana Curcio, Vincenzo D'Ambrosio and Lorenzo Neri.
The first weekend closes with the third event: "La ciulla," or Giulia De Caro, in a world premiere performance written by Carlo Faiello.
La Ciulla, one of the most enigmatic and fascinating figures of seventeenth-century Naples, was a woman of spectacle and power, unconventional and emancipated, capable of challenging the rigid patterns of her time. The result of painstaking historical and philological research, the show is led by the reciting voice of Gea Martire, a historical interpreter of the Neapolitan scene, accompanied by Elisabetta D'Acunzo and Chiara Di Girolamo in an evocative interweaving of speech and song. The music, performed by a chamber orchestra, elegantly evokes the 17th-century Neapolitan repertoire, restoring the vibrant and contradictory atmosphere of a brilliant and revolutionary era.
Five liveperformances with free admission with reservations required on the Eventbrite platform.
