"Lumie di Sicilia," original poetic-musical reading around Luigi Pirandello's novella of the same name
On Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025 at 7 p.m., at the Church of Saints Marcellinus and Festus, in Naples at Largo San Marcellino 10, appointment with "Lumie di Sicilia," an original poetic-musical reading around Luigi Pirandello's novella of the same name. Third event of the series MusicaoltrelaMusica, produced by N.O.S., Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti, in partnership with the University of Naples Federico II.
The text, a fateful intersection of destinies between a village piccolo player and a brilliant career singer, will be read on stage by Enzo Salomone and musically illustrated by instrumental and vocal pearls by Vivaldi, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini and others.
The Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti, with Francesco Attore (piccolo soloist), will be joined by young soprano Chiara Polese.
First published in a magazine in 1900, Lumie di Sicilia is the story of Micuccio Bonavino, a piccolo player in the band of his small Sicilian village who faces a long journey to find in a big city (probably in the North) Sina Marnis, or rather 'his' Teresina: the poor girl from Messina whose extraordinary singing talent he had discovered and whom he had made study at his own expense. A pure feeling was born between the two of them at the time, but now Sina is a young star launched into the golden world of opera, and when Micuccio arrives at his destination with his bag of lumie (the bright lemons brought as a gift from Sicily) he discovers that Sina now belongs to another world, which inexorably excludes him...
