'Encounter,' staged at the Piccolo Bellini

Scholastic Encounter. That woman presenting to the audience of students is a survivor of a disaster, the violent and accidental death of an innocent brother. Look at her. That student rising angrily, seeking attention and meaning, has also survived a family disaster. Although perhaps his deceased brother was not innocent, look at him. Two individuals, these survivors, who constitute the most basic form of society, models of humanity extracted from the everyday and dropped into an extreme situation. Their positions are symmetrical: devoured by a void, both try to move between the rubble of the South and the ruins of their respective existences. Their encounter etches our communal life, creating a wound that allows its innards to be glimpsed. Watch them.
