"Political parties"

staiano

On Monday, October 20, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., as part of Professor Alberto Lucarelli's Constitutional Law course, a Lectio magistralis by Sandro Staiano, president emeritus of the Italian Association of Constitutionalists, will be held in the Amirante Lecture Hall of the Department of Law at 32 Porta di Massa Street on the topic, "Political Parties."

The Western political systems of which we have experience are democracies of parties: these are the connective tissue of the form of state and intermediate the relationship between representatives and the represented. Parties inadequate to their participatory function or made marginal in the political process lead to severe crises of democracies, made to regress toward the primordial chaos of powers. To study parties for what they were, what they are and what they are becoming in the historical process is thus to question the fate of democracy.
