"DSN Rising Star in Dependability Award," awarded to a Frederick researcher
Roberto Natella, a Researcher at the DIETI department of the University of Frederick, received the "DSN Rising Star in Dependability Award" at the IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN) held this year in Baltimore, US.
Aimed at a young researcher who has demonstrated significant potential in proposing creative ideas and innovative research in the field of secure and resilient computing networks and systems, the award is sponsored by the "IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance" (TCFT) and the "IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance" (WG 10.4).
To be eligible for the award, the nominee must have earned a doctorate no more than 10 years prior to the date for nomination. Nominations may not be submitted by the nominee himself or herself, but by other members of the research community, who provide letters of reference in support of the nominee.
Selection is carried out by a 5-member committee representative of various research fields and geographic areas. The committee establishes evaluation criteria based on the practice of academic evaluation: impact of research publications, in the general field of security, measured by a combination of evidence appropriate to the context of the publications, including number of citations and hits, beneficiary users of the research, concrete use in industry, etc. Impact can also be achieved through successes in industry (assuming that the research finds application outside the candidate's company) and artifacts of widely deployed software systems, and must be demonstrated through research activities carried out independently of the dissertation supervisor, if appropriate.
