State Exams for Physicists for the First Time: Federico II University Launches the New Qualification for Membership in the Professional Association

The first state exams for certification as a Physicist and Junior Physicist are currently being held at the “Ettore Pancini” Department of Physics at the University of Naples Federico II—a new development that marks a historic milestone for the profession.

On July 27, 28, and 29 July 2026, at the Monte Sant’Angelo campus, the first exam session will be held for bachelor’s degree holders in class L-30 (Junior Physicist) and master’s degree holders in classes LM-17 and LM-44 (Physicist).

The launch of the exams was made possible by Interministerial Decree No. 609 of August 11, 2025, which introduced a simplified State Exam consisting of a single oral exam.

This marks the first time that the provisions of Law No. 3 of 2018 have been implemented: Eight years after the establishment of the Physicists’ Section within the Order of Chemists and Physicists, graduates can finally obtain their professional license through the State Examination and register with the Order to practice their profession.

The examination committee, appointed by the Rector of Federico II, is composed of Professors Salvatore Amoruso and Paolo Russo of the “Ettore Pancini” Department of Physics, and physicists Tiziana Capussela and Salvatore Grasso—respectively, a member of the Executive Council and an auditor of the Board of Auditors— appointed by the Order of Chemists and Physicists of Campania, with the support of Dr. Luisa Mormone (Academic Affairs and Student Services) and Dr. Giovanni Cantilena (Head of the Protocol Office) of Federico II University.

In addition to Federico II, the State Exams have also been taking place since July 27, 2026, at the Universities of Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Cosenza, Milan-Bicocca, Parma, Pavia, and Turin, marking the beginning of a new phase nationwide for entry into the physics profession.
