Jurisprudence mourns passing of professor Francesco Paolo Casavola
President emeritus of the Constitutional Court, historian of Roman law, served as dean of the Frederick Faculty
Mourning in the Athenaeum for the passing of Professor Francesco Paolo Casavola, president emeritus of the Constitutional Court. Born in 1931, jurist, historian of Roman law, constitutionalist, he taught Institutions of Roman Law first at the University of Bari (1960), then (1967) at the University of Naples Federico II. Also at the Federico II in 1977, he switched to teaching Roman law history and headed the Faculty of Law at the University of Federico II from 1983 to 1986.
Francesco Paolo Casavola was appointed constitutional judge in 1986 and was elected president of the Constitutional Court in November 1992 for the three-year period '92-'95.
Of his rulings, touching on the subjects of family law, leases, school and university systems, military law, the social security system, electoral laws and the repeal referendum, particularly significant are those that formulated for the first time the supreme constitutional principle of the secularity of the state.
A member of numerous Academies and scientific societies, among the various positions he held, from 1996 to 1998 he was Guarantor for publishing and broadcasting, and from 1998 until 2009 he was President of the Treccani Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia. He also served as chairman of the National Bioethics Committee in 2006.
