Federico Figlia di Granara, a sailor from Federico, wins the Nacra 17 Junior World Championship

First, he joined the Luna Rossa Youth Team; then, he won the junior world title in the Nacra 17 class in the Netherlands. This is an extraordinary moment for Federico Figlia di Granara, a 23-year-old law student at the University of Naples Federico II, who has achieved a double feat that propels him among the most promising young talents in Italian and international sailing.

The Neapolitan sailor, who grew up at the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia, was in fact selected by Luna Rossa alongside Lorenzo Sirena for the youth development project leading up to the 38th America’s Cup. A few days later, he won gold at the Junior World Championships in the Nacra 17 class —the mixed Olympic catamaran—as part of a crew with Caterina Sedmak.

This success confirms his steady progression. By 2025, Figlia di Granara had already won the European Junior Championship, the Under-24 World Championship bronze medal, and the Italian title—results that also earned him a spot on the Italian Olympic team with his sights set on Los Angeles 2028. Starting next year, Federico will compete as a senior athlete and will divide his time between the America’s Cup challenge with Luna Rossa and Olympic foiling sailing, where he is an experienced helmsman.

Alongside his athletic achievements, Federico is also pursuing his university studies thanks to the “Atleta Federiciano” program, through which Federico II University supports students involved in high-level sports, helping them balance their competitive careers with their studies. In a previous interview with the university, the Federico II sailor explained that he wanted to build his future without giving up either sports or his university education—a choice made possible by the support offered by the university.
