Elected in the first round with 1,680 votes. He succeeds Matteo Lorito. He will take office for the six-year term from 2026 to 2032.
Philologist Andrea Mazzucchi is the new rector of Federico II. He was elected in the first round with 1,680 votes.
A total of 2,532 people voted for the university’s top position, representing 86% of eligible voters.
The election campaign for the position of rector of the University of Naples Federico II featured professors Santolo Meo, Alessandro Pezzella, and Andrea Mazzucchi. They had different platforms but shared the common goal of making Federico II increasingly competitive.
The university community cast its votes as follows: Mazzucchi 1,680 votes, Meo 409, Pezzella 381, blank ballots 31, invalid ballots 31.
The elected rector, who succeeds Professor Matteo Lorito, will take office for the six-year term from 2026 to 2032.
“First and foremost ,I would like to thank the entire academic community, which demonstrated great democratic maturity by participating so widely in the vote ,”emphasized the new rector. “We can expect Federico II to continue to be a public university, a bastion of knowledge, a bastion of freedom, and a bastion of democracy. “The university does not merely impart skills; it fosters critical thinking, the ability to interpret the present, to plan for the future, and to best understand the needs and requirements of everyone.”
Andrea Mazzucchi, born in 1966 in Puglia, is a full professor of Italian Literary Philology and is serving his second term as head of the Department of Humanities. Among the most authoritative Italian scholars of Dante and the medieval literary tradition, Mazzucchi was educated in Naples and Florence: the author of over 300 publications, he is a full member of the Accademia Pontaniana and the National Society of Sciences, Letters, and Arts, president of the Society of Italian Literary Philologists, and a member of the Accademia della Crusca. His platform focuses on students, research, internationalization, campus sustainability, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. His vision is of a university as a shared space and a community of knowledge.
