Gianluca Giannini is the new director of the Department of Humanities

Gianluca Giannini is the new director of the Department of Humanities at the University of Naples Federico II. Born in 1973, he is a full professor of Moral Philosophy and was elected in the first round with broad support to lead the department for the three-year term from 2026 to 2028. He succeeds the philologist Andrea Mazzucchi, who was elected rector of the University of Naples Federico II for the six-year term 2026–2032 last July.

For years, Professor Giannini has been applying philosophical reflection to the most pressing contemporary issues. He teaches Ethics and Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and New Technologies, and Moral Philosophy, and since 2023 has coordinated the University’s Human&Future Task Force, an interdisciplinary body addressing the challenges of the digital transition.

His research focuses on the foundations of ethics in contemporary philosophy, the primacy of the political and its theoretical and practical implications, bioethics, and, more recently, the digital transition, digital ethics, and the anthropological impact of artificial intelligence.

Among his current roles, Professor Giannini serves as the scientific coordinator of the University’s Human&Future Task Force (since 2023); a member of the Faculty Board of the Doctoral Program in Philosophical Sciences, a member of the Council of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (since 2021), and editor-in-chief of book series (Giannini Editore, Loghìa Editore). He is a member of the Board of Arbitrators of the National Society of Psycho-Oncology (since 2014), of the Interuniversity Center for Bioethics Research (C.I.R.B.) and its Editorial Committee (since 2003), as well as the editorial and scientific committees of the journals “Logos” and “Scienza&Filosofia.”

The Department of Humanities is the largest of the 26 departments at Federico II and one of the largest in Italy.
