Research in Human Anatomy

The research group has a consolidated experience in the field of cardiovascular system biology and regenerative medicine. The researchers' interests include the regenerative potential of adult human heart and biology of arterial wall. The group uses several advanced techniques of morphological and functional studies, aimed at the characterization of the structure and biological properties of tissues, including the evaluation of extracellular matrix composition, cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, apoptosis and cell-matrix interactions. The specific aims of the ongoing projects, dedicated towards development of bioactive scaffolds for myocardial regeneration, are (1) characterization of cardiac extracellular matrix typical of normal and pathological hearts in vivo and in vitro, (2) characterization of cardiac primitive cells cultured on matrix produced by cardiac fibroblasts in vitro, (3) optimization of the protocol for the production of cardiac decellularized matrix ex vivo.
