Cytology and Predictive Molecular Pathology

The Cytology and Molecular Predective Pathology group is dedicated to the analysis of genomic alterations that are predective of response to the targeted treatment of solid tumours. To this end, most assessments are made on nucleic acids extracted from histological and cytological samples of cancer patients, in particular focusing on lung, and colon carcinoma, melanoma and gastro-intestinal stromal tumours. Molecular techniques are also employed to refine the cytological evaluation of thyroid cancer on fine needle aspirates. In these settings, the research group develops and validate next generation sequencing (NGS) approaches to detect, on neoplastic tissue and on circulating free DNA, markers predictive of response to the targeted treatment of advanced solid neoplasms.
