Dipartimento di Matematica

The Mathematics Department is named after the famous neapolitan mathematician Renato Caccioppoli. It consists of more then 100 researchers which covers the entire range of pure and applied research areas of mathematics: Algebra, Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, Applied Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, History of Mathematics, Mathematics Education. The Department is world-renowned and capable of attracting funds on both national and international level. Since 2008 already four members have been awarded as PI of ERC European grants.

Each year we have many short-term and long-term visitor that testify intensive interactions with foreign Universities. The formation of young researchers is a primary objective of the Department. In addition to the bachelor and master degree in Mathematics we also offer a PhD program in Mathematical Science and Informatics

The Department is home to a sub-office of Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica "Francesco Severi", through which promotes scientific research and post graduate education in mathematical sciences.

Libraries, labs and facilities

  • The library ''Carlo Miranda'' is integrated into the library system of University of Napoli Federico II. You can contact the library staff at mirandabib@unina.it. The head office of the library is located in the main building of the Department inside the campus of Monte S. Angelo. Other offices are in via Claudio 21 (currently closed for renovation) and in via Mezzocannone 8 (museum - not open to the public).
  • Computer Center - The computer room is located at Level I of the Department offering 35 workstations running Linux.

Third mission

The Department of Mathematics takes part, since 2005, to the activities named Piano Lauree Scientifiche (PLS) in the framework of Mathematics and Statistics. In Italy the PLS is the main program devoted to college fair in science area and it is addressed to high school senior students. All activities are the results of a strong collaboration between several high schools and the University Federico II. Every year the Department of Mathematics, by means of the PLS' activities, involves almost 300 students, coming from more than 20 schools, in laboratory activities focused to show them typical mathematical research subjects and methodologies. All these activities culminate with a meeting where the students produce their own independent works and results. Moreover, among other activities, the PLS program provides also the publication of educational supplies (Fare Matematica Insieme. A cura di M. Lapegna, Liguori ed. (2013)) in order to spread the activities to a wider audience.
