DISTAR

The Department of Earth Science, Environment and Resources http://www.distar.unina.it/it/ Research promotes researches in the field of Geosciences. This deals with traditional disciplines such as the study of history and evolution of organisms and habitats, cartography and geophysics, as well as applied disciplines spanning from the evaluation of geological risks (seismic, volcanic, landsliding), soil defense, the study of minerals and rocks used in manifacturing industries, the study of groundwater and environmental contaminants, the search for oilfields and mining deposits. Applied and basic researches are both given full appreciation and equal dignity.

DiSTAR puts effort into the spread and application of scientific results as a support and integration for the socioeconomic development, and to land-use planning activities. An important goal for DiSTAR is supervising its own students' careers to offer them the best working opportunities. On a similar vein, DiSTAR works to prepare PhD students meant to lead on future of geoscience research http://www.distar.unina.it/it/xxix-ciclo/scienze-della-terra-ambiente-risorse.

Libraries, labs and facilities

The library of DiSTAR - DiSTAR library collects the volumes of former "Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra", "Dipartimento di Paleontologia" and "Dipartimento di Geofisica e Vulcanologia". The library is open to both the department personell and to educational visitors (including students). The historical section houses old important volumes of ancient geology tracing back to XVII - XX century. Within the collection, a special section includes volumes with subject Eastern Phylosophy, which was mainly assembled by Giuseppe De Lorenzo (1871-1957).

Third mission

DiSTAR interacts with extensively the public. Public services, research agreements and projects are strongly developed by the department. The main subjects of this service are petroleum geoscience, natural hazards risk assesment, resarch on water pollution, and availability, assessment of risk by seismic and volcanic threats, to procurement of raw materials.

  • The DiSTAR produces plenty of cartographic material, especially the nation-wide official cartographic project (CARG). The DiSTAR has ongoing signed research agreements with Shell S.p.A., Shell Italia, STATOIL ASA, I.Z. ITALIANA ZEOLITI, AMMINISTRAZIONE PROVINCIALE DI CASERTA, ENTE ACQUE DELLA SARDEGNA.
  • A collaboration exists between the department and the Vesuvio National Park, the CNR – Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali Ceramici (ISTEC CNR).
  • An agreement links the Department to the Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimente (OAC) to study alien material. Further agreements are ongoing with the Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa di Napoli, Westend, Wind and TSAT.
  • A number of scientific collaborations there exist with Universities of foreign countries, including University of Tasmania, City College of New York, Cuny –USA, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (USA), China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, Cina, United States Geological Survey (USGS) Reston, Virginia, USA, Centre National de Richerches Industrielle et Technologique du Madagascar, University of North Madagascar at Antsiranana, University of Rio de Janeiro (Brasile), University of Texas at Dallas, U.S.A., the American Museum of Natural History, the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration-(IGGE)-China Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), Langfang, China, China University of Geosciences, Beijing, China, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
