Plant Genetics and Biotechnology

This Division promotes research activities in plant genetics and biotechnology aimed at understanding and solving problems related to the needs of consumers, environment, agrifood and pharmaceutical industry. Activities are based on the use of a vast array of conventional and innovative (bio)technologies applied to prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms of agricultural and forestry interest. Among technologies used are: in vitro plant cell, tissue and organ culture, microalgae technology, cellular and molecular biology, genetic and genomic engineering, marker assisted genomic selection, bioinformatics, cytogenetics, mutagenesis and biometrics. Main areas of interest are:

  • structural and functional genetics and genomics;
  • genetic resources and plant breeding;
  • plant and agrifood biotechnologies;
  • bioinformatics.
